Impression technique

The impression for setup model is usually made with hydrophilic vinyl polysiloxane impression material placed into stock plastic trays designed for orthodontic patient.

Various combination of putty, heavy- and medium-viscosity polyvinylsiloxanes, or heavy and light polysulfides are well suited for impressions for setup model. In Anboini, a combination of putty and light body vinyl polysiloxanes is used for impressions for setup model.

The following materials and instruments are needed for the impression:

  • Putty and light body polyvinylsiloxanes
  • Stock plastic tray
  • Base plate wax

Impression Procedure

A.  Working cast is prepared (Fig. 1).

B.  The base plate wax of 1.5mm thickness is adapted to the arch on the working cast, which is extended to 2~3mm apically from the marginal gingival (Fig. 2).

C.  The adapted base plate wax is delivered to the mouth and preliminary impression is made with putty (Figs. 3 and 4). After placing the putty filled impression tray in the mouth, spread some impression material (putty) on the vestibular area to be recorded well. For impression of the mandible, ask the patient to raise the tongue.

D.  Putty impression with wax (Fig. 5).

E.  After removing the wax from putty impression (Fig. 6), light body is poured into the putty and final impression is made (Fig. 7). During final impression, the wax space provides room for light body impression material, and well reproduced vestibular area serve as stop and ensure the room.
